Whether it’s a nice vacation in Europe or a weekend getaway in LA,  Airbnb often comes as a viable option for everyone. A unicorn in the space of hospitality, Airbnb founded by Brian Chesky and friends, is a pioneer in its space.

Brian Chesky was born on August 29, 1981, in New York. After graduating from high school, Chesky attended the Rhode Island School of Design where he met Joe Gebbia, another one of the co-founders of Airbnb. After college, Chesky quit his job and moved to San Francisco where he rented an apartment together with Joe.

The landlord suddenly increased the rent of their apartment they were living in by 25%. Since Brian was jobless at the time, he was barely able to make rent.

His Eureka Moment came when the pair thought of renting out one of the extra bedrooms for bed-and-breakfast. The problem was, there was no bed in this bedroom but Joe had an airbed so instead of calling it a bed-and-breakfast they called it an airbed and breakfast. That idea stuck with them and they quickly created a really simple web page and sent it to local bloggers.

Initially, they got 3 people to stay with them, Joe and Brian not only made a $1,000 but they also formed friendships with their guests and also showed them around. Later, they created a website which allowed an individual to book online to stay.

Soon after, the website gained popularity, with guests becoming hosts in locations like Berlin, New York and Barcelona. Today Airbnb has a presence in 192 countries and 40,000 cities. Airbnb’s motto is “Belong Anywhere”. The meaning behind that is explained by Brian Chesky: “We asked ourselves, ‘What is our mission? What is the big idea that truly defines Airbnb? Really, we’re about home. You see, a house is just a space, but a home is where you belong.” He describes that Airbnb wants to give more than a space to rent, it wants to provide a complete experience. The company has now become a multimillion-dollar venture. Brian Chesky was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2015” and in 2019 has a net worth of around $3.8 billion.
