In today’s modern and tech-savvy world there is hardly anyone who has not heard of Microsoft. Microsoft has always been the top technology company in the world. In today’s story, we will learn about Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft who has changed the way we use software technology.

William Henry Gates III was born on 28th October 1955 in Seattle in the United States of America. He was the 2nd child amongst two other siblings.  Bill’s fascination with computers started at a very young age. As a young kid, he was mesmerized by the fact that the computer did everything he instructed him to do.

His father, a successful lawyer encouraged Bill from a young age to be competitive, bright and curious. Bill was only 13 years old when he wrote his first programme. In the earlier days, it was quite expensive to use computers but Bill Gates and his friends saved money working through the summers for computer companies.

After completing his schooling, he enrolled at the prestigious Harvard University. His Eureka moment came in 1974 when Bill Gates saw a picture of a microcomputer with the new Intel microprocessor chip named Altair 8800.  He quickly realised its potential and was certain that people were going to write real programs for this chip. He wanted to be part of it.

He had a desire to be a pioneer of the era of the personal computing revolution. Therefore he dropped out of Harvard to pursue his passion.

He worked hard to take advantage of the opportunity, along with his childhood friend Paul Allen – the co-creator of Microsoft. They bought a program from Seattle Computer Products and modified it to provide an environment for personal computer and named the product as MSDOS. He sold the same to IBM, a technological giant back then known for its personal computers. The program did not make Bill rich but the historic deal which he made with IBM by giving them the program for free with a license of 1$ per computer sold with this program.

Despite IBM’s name on the operating system the press quickly identified Microsoft as being very influential on the new computer. IBM computers sold like hotcakes which made Bill Gates a millionaire overnight. This was the start of Microsoft Windows.  In 1987, Gates was listed as a billionaire in Forbes magazine’s 400 Richest People in America issue.

In 2014 he retired and stepped down as Chairman of Microsoft. However he has remained active and continues to do great work, Bill and his wife Melinda Gates have been named the most generous philanthropists in the US. Bill Gates chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest private charitable foundation helping millions worldwide. A constant source of motivation to many entrepreneurs and technologists for Bill Gates has received a lot of awards for his innovation and business leadership.
