“This is not a business,  I started as a business. It’s a passion which ended up becoming a business.”

Raveendran Byju is the founder of the edtech app, Byju’s the learning app enabling thousands of students to prepare for the competitive entrance exams.

In today’s times, we must all try to understand the importance of integrating technology into learning. With the advances in technology, education, too, must keep up for the sake of students. Mr Raveendran understood this and decided to come up with something totally out of the box.

Eureka Moment once again takes this privilege, of bringing to you the stories, of such great achievers and inspirations and strives to motivate you, through the same. To know more such stories, do subscribe, and press the bell icon, to receive further notifications.

He hails from Azhikode, a small village in Kerala and has graduated in mechanical engineering. Both his parents are teachers. His father, a physics teacher and his mother taught mathematics. His parents always encouraged him to participate in sport-related activities.

Although initially an engineering graduate, he loved teaching students. He was an avid learner and excellent teacher. He used to help students prepare for different entrance exams.

One day he was at a friends place for vacation in Bangalore, who was preparing for CAT examination. His friend, knowing Byju was a bright student, asked for help in the preparation. Raveendran also decided to give the CAT entrance exam for fun. To everyone’s surprise, he scored 100 percentile. He was amazed and thought it was a game of sheer luck. So he decided to appear for the exam again. Lo and behold! He had scored 100 percentile again. This was his Eureka Moment.

This was the idea that brought him into the spotlight, as a teacher, creator and motivator. His journey as an entrepreneur began here. He started teaching students on his friend’s terrace. Initially, he only taught MBA aspirants. With time, he broadened his horizons and started teaching more courses. He also gave up his job to focus his time and energies only on teaching. Finally, in 2011, the mobile app called “Byjus- the learning App” was launched. It gained popularity immediately due to ease of access and feasibility to students. With the help of this app, students could learn and understand concepts at their own time, at their own pace. The app is still widely used by millions of students all around the country and has yielded extravagant results, for both students and Mr Raveendran himself. Byjus was the first startup in India to be funded by the Chan-Zuckerberg initiative. By 2019, Raveendran’s net worth was around $6 billion. Byju Raveendran has set an admirable and sublime example for not only entrepreneurs but also teachers all over the country.
