Missile Man of India – Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

‘You have to dream before your dreams can come true.’ From selling newspapers on the streets to being India’s 11th President, the dream of the little boy to be in that newspaper came true.

Today’s story is about the ‘Missile Man of India’, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Azad. Born and raised in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam was a hardworking and bright student right from his school life and had a strong desire to learn. He loved to devote hours to mathematics and physics and dreamt of flying high in the stratosphere as a child. Therefore, he completed his studies in Physics and Aerospace engineering. He applied to the Air force and stood 9th among 25 applicants but unfortunately, the force wanted only 8 of them and he was rejected.

Downhearted Kalam took a bus to Delhi via Rishikesh. There, he spotted Swami Sivananda a persona of Buddha. On the discussion of the incident with him, Swami advised him to accept the destiny and lead the destined path. This was the eureka moment which gave him the will and mantra of his life – “Defeat the defeatist tendency”.

Then, he worked with popular organisations like Defence Research & Development Services, ISRO, INCOSPAR committee and many others. As the project Director, he contributed to the development of India’s first satellite ‘Rohini’. At DRDO, he developed five different missiles. Kalam was honoured with many awards like Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan and became ‘People’s President’.

Exceptional personalities like APJ Abdul Kalam inspire everyone to dare to dream. Many people are motivated, and started new initiatives, after reading his biography, “Wings of Fire”.

In essence, APJ Abdul Kalam is an immortal Indian legend who won his dreams with his dedication and our hearts with his beautiful thoughts.
